Grand Master is a life title.  On that same page that the link is to, it says that his title is grand master.

Title is only reserved for those over 2500 rating.

It's not so simplistic.

So what is he then, IM? The title classification system for African Americans is so confusing.

As for racism directed towards GM Ashley, of course it exists. Just take a look at some of the comments that are made about him during a broadcast. It's just a part of life for African Americans.

However, the situation with Magnus Carlsen was simply annoyance with the question.

You mean black people?

camter

Must say he was very nice to Kaspy today.

But, I am glad that after the Carlsen interview, Maurice has been quite nice, except possibly to Anand.

The guy was good enough to get a GM title, and perhaps in passing, we can get some clarification as to whether GM is a Title, or just a rating.

Maurice has not been attacked as a colour issue. It is just a canard.

But, he is not admired for his attitude.

As a commentator, he should be more respectful.

Top Chess players are not sitting ducks in a shooting alley.

Ashleys "personality" has been consistent ever since he came on the chess scene. He has a huge ego, never stops talking, is always looking to take center stage. His background was of a hustler and a scam artist, much about his struggles to make it against long odds. He worked hard. Dedicated a lot of time to the study of chess. He had a goal of GM and attained it. 2402 qualifies under certain circumstances. Although he has not played rated games since, it is a lifetime Title. His "Creation" of The Millionaire Chess events speaks volumes of his ambitions. He has no formal training in journalism or broadcasting. A self taught motivational speaker. Type of guy that can be polarizing. You either like him or not. It's obvious to me the top players don't "respect" him in the interview booth as camter said..."they are not sitting ducks in a shooting gallery". Has absolutely nothing to do with race.

I never claimed to know "thousands".  I believe I said at least a dozen!  A dozen is 12!

Maurice Jones Drew - Former NFL Runningback

Maurice "Mo" Cheeks - NBA (Former?) head coach

Maurice Clarrett - Ohio State Runningback in the early 2000's

Maurice White - Founder of Earth, Wind, and Fire (a black group)

Maurice Harkless - NBA Player - played for Portland for a while but I think he's with Orlando right now

Maurice Greene - Retired American Track and Field sprinter

Maurice Morris - Played for the Seahawks and Lions in the 2000s

And then there are about half a dozen that I've either worked with or know myself simply through connections.  They are/were all black as well except for 1, hence the edit (a 2200 chess player in NC - faced him a couple of times).

Well, I wasn't being serious about the "thousands". Smile

I knew one Maurice in high school. Yeah, he was black... Laughing

I needed a break. I'm bored today so I'm posting. I'll probably get sick of being here and leave again for a while.

Me and Sir Maurice Micklewhite did a few films together. Smile

Once a GM always a GM. Isn't there a floor? And no not racism. Ashley does a great job making something that bores some people exciting.  He is the best chess commentator hands down. His question to Magnus may have been questionable, but let's face it Magnus has no social skills and can be a prick. We can't expect Magnus to always smoke every player, especially in a field as tough as that one. I think Magnus could of handled it better and maybe just explained that he can't go undefeated every game. But as far as your attempt to troll. I give this libtard a 3/10

Three out of ten, hey that's pretty good Jalavan's nephew.

Regarding the GM title.... Once earned you do not lose it. Rating decline has nothing to do with it. Really not complicated at all.

Eoin-MacLove

in theory, you could be a 400 rated GM.

sea_of_trees

Or a -2800 rated GM

Eoin-MacLove

go for it sea_of_cheese.

Village plus neighbouring villages. All other you wrote is lie. Think you know everything, and that makes you a scholar: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/scholastic-chess/please-tell-me

BS. There is such a thing as "floor" rating. In all class ratings, your rating can not drop more than a certain amount of points or 1 class. A GM Title can be achieved under certain circumstances with a 2400 rating, as Maurice Ashley did. A GM's performance rating can drop below 2400, but 2400 remains as the floor for future events. If someone attains an A 1800+ rating their floor is 1 class, a B rating of 1600 which they can never go below. Thats USCF, Fide maybe slightly different. Micheal Rohde is the lowest rated GM in the US at 2394.

What are you implanting? That Maurice Ashley is not true GM and has never been over 2500 rating?
