Hello, I am new at this. I just beat ************, an American slow player, and after I checkmated him, I courteously said "Well played", his answer bein "fy". Is this common chess usage?
I always just type "u2". It covers every possibility.
The "gg" meme is beyond my understanding. Perhaps I should take a break from chess and get a life.
...I haven't figured out what a "life" is yet. Maybe its a variation of the Caro-Kann?
I find almost all of you to be arrogant, judgemental, and making statements based only on speculation, and Not fact----Bunch of judges---i am stating fact, based upon ignorant people and their interpetations.

Faith Yancy was a character on the American TV show Law & Order: Criminal Intent known for the great skill with which she would deliver her checkmates. In many American clubs, it is common to invoke her name whenever anyone plays an especially pretty checkmate.
I apologize for every sane American. (There still are a few of us.)
lol Who do you think you're fooling?
fy could quite easily be a typo for "Indeed you too, sir, played quite a fine game of chess - bravo. Your skills are commendable beyond by abilities to commend them, and I would be honored if you would be so kind as to accept a rematch."
Perhaps he wanted to let you know that he found the game satisfying but all of the other keys on his keyboard were broken.
It comes from a line in an early English play "Fy on thee, felon. Fy on thee, fy! For all thy witchcraft and sorcery, to dispute with thee I am ready, that all the people may watch and wonder."
