You get member points every time you make a post in the forum, blog, add photo's, add an article or news item etc .. You cannot do anything with your member points, they are just to show how active a member is on the site.
To use the status bar, click edit, type a message then press enter on the keyboard. Its so you can leave messages like: "open for challenges" or "having a great weekend" 
What the heck are member points and what are they used for?
