Underregulated capitalism, which favors efficiency over substance, advertising over quality products, mergers over entrepreneurship, shut down Borders and put Barnes and Noble at risk. These drove most of the independent bookstores out of business.

Wow, Ziryab and I completely agree on something :).

And as usual, you and I completely disagree :)

I remember that when I was a kid, many years before the internet I would wander around in the East Village which had lots of bookstores in those days and I would go from store to store buying books. Now everything is on the internet so who needs books? Without books the President can't read history and find out what happens when leaders lose popularity and so he tried to push a phoney baloney health care plan that no one wants and now the whole USGOV is shut down. But don't worry! From the internet I have found out that the space aliens are coming and they are taking over the earth. And they have a time machine that will bring back the old bookstores and thus re-open the USGOV!

During a recent visit to a large bookstore, I noticed that there were five shelves of Sudoku books but only one shelf of chess books.

If the OP's message is simply that Americans prefer Sudoku over chess, then yes, I've also noticed that phenomenon using the book store indicator.
