Here is an example of this guy teaching at StLouis Chess Center:

How is this noob allowed to teach at one of the great chess centers of the world? StLouis Chess Center. His advice is pretty bad - he's unfairly biased towards doubled pawns, for example, and basically his opponents always hang their pieces or lose to 1-2 move tactics right out of the opening.

What do you guys think? Should StL CC be ashamed of themselves for allowing this?

Just to be clear, I'm not against players of any rating or skill level. Just don't think they should all be teaching.

Don't be a jerk.  Life's too short.

You need to be careful with your forums trolling. There are moderators and if they start seeing your bad behavior you may lose access to the forums entirely.

Mike got that job because he absolutely loves chess. If I loved chess to the same degree, I would have gotten that job and the class would have actually learned something happy.png

The guy is rated 1700 USCF, peak 1800. Not even FIDE rated. Lots of holes in his knowledge and biased perceptions of chess.

I love his enthusiasm, and maybe my first post was too harsh, but how can you have GMs and IMs lecturing, and then suddenly this guy?

after wasting a lot of time in various chess videos I think Videos sucks and only for fun and time pass for lazy guys no matter who makes it,books are the thing.but you have to find out which books you need.hope not in off topic.

What Mike lacks in chess he makes up in personality.  The second he starts talking it's funny- he has more the presence of a standup comedian than chess guru.  Sometimes when you are teaching a subject to children and beginners making it fun can be as powerful as the actual knowledge - Mike's not there helping GMs prepare for tournaments after all.

"What Mike lacks in chess he makes up in personality."

STLCC is not a place for jokers and clowns. It's a place for good chess. Having a guy like Kummer making legit lessons doesn't make them look good.

I did find a video of Mike, earlier in his career...

The audience he is targeting is beginner.  I think he is doing fine.  Is he going to make mistakes?  Of course, but find me someone that doesnt.

All of the football / soccer managers at the top of the English Premier League were only average players. I don't know what it's like elsewhere but being a good, but not great chess player doesn't mean he can't be a great coach.

All I'm saying is that this guy is a serious downgrade in the quality that we've seen from other instructors.

Ben Finegold has a beginner class - he teaches it way better than Mike does.
