Millionaire Chess convinced me to give up chess entirely -- for poker!

Why waste time on chess when I could be making mega fazools in Vegas, baby . . . eating fine cut rate buffet food, surrounded by showgirls and strippers, wearing cool shades and those cool green visor thingys.

That's what it's all about.  I've known of several other chess fanatics, like "Tactical Symphony" here, that have given up chess and are making huge smackers playing the royal game of poker.

Thats funny.  I've read that there are growing numbers of chessmasters who have given up chess for Backgammon because of all the memorization necessary for opening moves at that level.  While backgammon does have the luck of the dice, there is also great skill involved especially when it comes to knowing probabilities.

I saw some talk show a few years ago where they had one of the top women players in the United States on and it turns out her boyfriend or fiance left her because he couldn't beat her at Backgammon.

Even though backgammon programs play world class games now I don't believe they are nearly as dominent against the top world human players as chess is.

Backgammon is a bit too Medieval for me.

I keep thinking someone is going to skull me with a mace or battle axe and "get medieval on my ass" if I turn in a good round.

Plus that "Doubling Cube" reminds me of Dungeons and Dragons and the 24 sided die hit points etc.............

Whatever helps her sleep at night.

You hardly ever hear about the "poker players" who lose all of their money and declare bankruptcy. And something to consider, I know someone who was playing in a private poker game; he was winning all the money, so some of the players accused him of cheating (he wasn't). They cut off his hand. This is a true story. He was also a chess player. Be careful what you wish for.

I heard this also happened to the 1975 Indiana amateur bowling champion.

You don't have to read them to sell them.

I don't even know how to play Backgammon. I was shown a few times, but

my impression is that chess is much more fun!

If her boyfriend left her because she won at Backgammon, that was surely

not the only reason it didn't work out!

It's funny that the thread has appeared after the seminal tourney whose co-creator Maurice Ashley had claimed that 'chess will be the new poker' (i.e. be the most profitable and booming game out there). And there is a need for a 'new poker' because online poker seems to be near its death-bed (I mean, already outside the US too).

Or, if you wish, it's starting to resemble chess more and more - there are fewer 'recreational' players who want just to gamble and have fun and don't care about how well they're playing, and more 'regular' players who're not having fun, are serious about learning to play well but not dedicated enough to keep up with the pace of improvement of the average skill of their opponents.

There was a very heated argument in the Skittles room at the Philadelphia Open this year between two guys playing Backgammon for money.

LOOOOOL. Chess and poker are very similar. Even Magic The Gathering is good

I know I would lose at poker,

even worse than at chess.
