Capitalize on their mistakes, don't make similar mistakes yourself. Actually just the second part. If you aren't making mistakes, you would automatically be capitalizing on any mistakes they make. Of course not making mistakes is easier said than done, so this advice is pretty useless. We all know not to make mistakes, we just can't help ourselves.
Before you commit to a move, check to see if you are about to leave a piece unprotected and exposed to immediate capture. For bonus points, try to identify each unprotected and each attacked piece or pawn. Just taking the time to look at all that, just trying to look for all that, may help you see the other things you want to see. I'm not very good at this yet, but just trying seems to have reduced my outright blunders to near zero lately. Of course, I still suck, but that's going to take a minute.
