The last thing this site needs is a child monitoring children here.
Amen to that. We get enough schoolyard behavior here as it is.

bnm: wow! this is a pretty creative and nice way to try to keep things friendly! but like some of the people said, trusting the minors isn't exactly the best idea, but this is very smart of you honestly! i totally get where you're going with this! ![]()
Those under 18 often abuse power, even unintentionally. Moderation needs maturity and restraint, so giving minors any authority isn’t a good idea.
Mhm
Children don't even have a developed amygdala. They make rash decisions based on emotions. Also from what I've seen from you in my club abusing the admin power that I eventually took from you, I doubt they would trust you with power over the site.
Breaking a friendship just because of different views isn’t very nice and mature, is it?
I never broke anything. I simply called him out for immature behaviour and he was upset over it. I'm not active much on the social side anymore anyways

Dont confuse "friendship" with online acquaintances. It may be called a friends list, but how many people here do any of us really know?
... it’s about how immature it is to unfriend someone just because of different opinions.
Hey we're taking about a future mod and near future mod helper or assistant or maid or something here ... We all need friends in high places or near high places or standing on a mound or something ...
The term assistant moderator sounds better. The idea would mean all attempts to moderate would 1st have to go to an adult moderator for approval then actions could be taken. This is assuming the moderators are overloaded & need help, I'm not sure if that's true or not. It's an idea, good or bad, that signals at least that you're thinking.

Or associate. Or vice. Or additional. Or sub. Or ... We need more titles, yeah, that's what we need
LOL, sawdof,
. Also, yes, read The Lord of the Flies or watch The Simpsons episode based on that novel. When Ralph says "it tastes like ... burning" you really get the message.
This suggestion won't go anywhere. There were already "moderator assistants" in the past and that program (Community Defenders) was unofficially scrapped when Tyrm was hired. Chess.com is quite happy with their hands-off approach where volunteer mods handle things and staff barely touches the forums. If you look at my club memberships, you will see that I know whereof I speak. In fact, RJC and I were the first community members invited by the moderators running the club to be Community Defenders...I also recommended several other posters that were invited (Ziryab, BlueEmu, etc.).
I can still post there, but the club is moribund, nobody has posted there for quite a while. As I said, staff likes the status quo, and the wall between volunteers and staff as well. The forums here are basically a legacy feature now that they will allow to exist, but not put any significant resources into.
Are these opinions or facts?
These are personal observations, ones that are holding up quite well since before Covid. And since I was privy to some of the ongoing staff/mod interactions that you are not, those observations are not purely from a free member's POV, as they might appear to you.
Did you know that Chess.com has (or at least had, no sightings in a long time) a Community Manager on staff? Have you ever seen her post here...?

So I have already asked about under-18s being moderators (my dream job), so I have a proposal.
There are more kids online all the time than adults. Why not take advantage of that?
I propose that there be a new role called a moderator helper. I do not know exactly what powers a moderator gets. I assume they can mute and delete stuff, but adults have real jobs because moderators do not get paid. They can have people who are trustworthy and pass tests have stronger communication with staff.
People like me are on the chess.com social side 3-4 hours a day! I see so much stuff that gets ignored. This is a problem that needs to be dealt with. SO that way, chess.com doesnt get in trouble legally, we can say that you're not telling us to look for bad things, but IF we see something, we can report it, and it will get special attention. We also get a label in our account 😏.
I do not think we should get more powers because I feel like kids will take advantage of this.
This is something that should be given to ensure people. Who passes the tests? It should also be made notice that it is not illegal in any way as long as the minor doesnt SIGN ANYTHING and doesnt get paid!
I respect opinions, but personally I think that minors aren't mature enough to be a mod, and anyway, they would probably get rejected by chess.com.
