Both :)
Seriously though. They can give you both a reward, and a certificate at the same time, if trophies are costly.

Given the amount of money you are talking about I would rather have a nice trophy. You could probably use the money you won to buy yourself a trophy.
A trophy is better than a meager amount of money. At least you can store it your room and feel proud.
I have a few shelves stuffed with trophies and medals.
I was 17 at that time
I would rather win a trophy. Telling my wife I finally won and the prize is 65$ would only prove in her mind that the time I dedicate to this game is not warrented.
When I moved to Portugal I threw away most of the trophies I had won in 25 years of playing in the USA. I kept only a few that were special to me. Since coming here I have about 2 dozen more trophies and I am moving back to the US this year, perhaps I will throw most of them away again ? In nicer tournies you get a trophy and money usually but I would choose the money unless the trophy is really nice/special.
NM Reb:
- Why did you threw the most of your trophies away?.. I understand if you had a lot of them, but its a credit for your great play of chess, and a memory for everyone who have won any tournament?.. If i could choose, i would like to have a trophy for the 1. place, and a little bonus of money for the win..

Buy a nice medal, have it engraved, fit it on a shelf or in a drawer, and pocket the remaining money.
I know I may be able to buy a trophy from a trophy store but it feels kind of wrong to me to self honour meself with a purchased trophy even if I somehow won it. I won the money not the trophy. I would feel kind of silly if I purchased a giant trophy. If I chose to purchase one it would be a tiny trophy.
It is something completely different if the trophy was handed over to me from the tournament leader then I would truly feel I earned it - not purchased it. they could decide on shape of the trophy and size.
to hermes 3: the idea with the certificate is good and I will try to suggest it.
With 64 dollars I could buy myself a nicer trophy than they were offering and then still have enough left over to buy myself a nice dinner as a victory gift (to myself)
i'd take the money. i don't need a trophy to remind me that i won. i already know that i won it. not to mention i hate trophy ceremonies and being presented awards and crap in front of people. it makes me very uncomfortable.
gotta go with the dosh - I agree with Reb, I moves around the world a lot an´have thrown all kindsa trophies away, as well as furniture an´anythin´that ain´t easy to cart along
it is long time that this thread was active, but I would like hear from those who threw away their trophy if they ever regret it?
I participate in a lot of real life tournaments and it cost around 150 dkk (28$) to enter a tournament. The highest I may be able to win is around 400dkk 64$.
If you win you get an envelope with the amount in it.
The thing is though it may be nice to win money I have only won 1 tournament once and I have nothing to show for it. I cannot wave an envelope or hang it on the wall.
I would rather want to win a trophy than a few danish kroner. I don't know how much you can buy for 64$ in the US but in denmark I can only buy 2 bluray movies for 400 kroner.
what would you like to win most: money or a trophy? (I wanted to make it a survey but I don't know if can make one)
(of course if it was like 1000 $ I could live with not getting a trophy - but I think a trophy is a must in any tournament)
