More OTB Cheating !

I actually only read this article today...the rating of the GMs involved are shocking...over 2600?..one would think that such a thing would not even be considered at that level...then again, there is no level for integrety...they were not the first, and surely will not be the last.

The most scandalous part of this is that the organisers actually allowed phones? (don't they know phones can access computers now??)

...on this site alone, an average of just under 100 accounts are closed monthly for cheating...theory suggests that those caught are only the tip of the ice berg...just like the criminals being caught (crime is going down?), and the amount of drugs being confiscated (we are winning the fight on drugs?).

This is a huge problem we face in our "developed countries"- no one wants to work hard anymore, just steal from someone elses efforts...the outside may look beautiful...but decay eats away at the soul...

...off with their heads...

It appears that a phones weren't used in playing area. The middleman used the phone outside, then entered the playing area and sent the signals.

People were allowed to go back and fourth from the playing area? The info does not clearly describe how the cheating took place, only that texting messages were the MO.

It does describe the method, read the entire text from the link in the original post. 1st guy used an engine in his room.He then sent the moves to the 2nd guy. 2nd guy then entered the playing area and he sent out the signals to the 3rd guy who was playing the match. Signals were sent by method of standing near the tables/players for some time faking that he observes the games. 4 French players and 4 opponents covered the letters/numbers. So standing near the guy designated as B/2 and then near the guy designated as D/4 meant move the piece to b4. As 2600+ players know the game very well, it was ussualy enough just to signal the destination square as GM would know which peace to move there.

Thanks Dragec,

You would think that all "electronic devices" would be banned from the playing area by now (this in not the first cheats to use similar tactics)...what intrigues me is the rating >2600...the top player in the world is only 200 odd points higher...what goal is worth such a risk? Could his real rating be far lower, and he has been cheating his way up the ladder for a while? Do these Tournaments check all boards and compare with engines after the matches?...it may be time to start doing so...

I have never played an official OTB game, but if someone was on the phone the whole time either making a call or sending text messages after every move, wouldn't you suspect something?

Isn't it extremely obvious when someone cheats in an OTB game?

Avatar of bourtm

Perhaps I'm an idiot but how do you cheat in chess and of what use is a cell phone whether turned on or not?

Avatar of bondocel

That's so bad! In the near future probably chess players will play naked and isolated in a cell. Their method is so good that it's impossible to prevent it in a playing hall with public.

On another hand, Yelena Dembo has not been accused of cheating. If you cannot support your accusations, well, it means there are no accusations.

At GM level it is enough to get computer "suggestions" for several key moves. Sometimes tactics get so complex that only a computer can evaluate them.

Did you hear about a thing called money? :)

I agree.

Anyone can just go to a trophy shop and buy a gold medal with their name engraved on it.

It just doesn't bring the same satisfaction unless you actually earn it.

It's not for pride or accomplishment -

It's for the money...

You can't make good money off chess.

Just a simple job like an engineer makes more money than a chess grandmaster.

She has been kicked out of chess.com for cheating.

That's not how the human mind works, unfortunately.

In the cheater's mind, they "deserve" to win, and cheating is just making it easier to get what they could get by other means if they felt like it.

Avatar of __vxD_mAte

doesn't radio and wifi potentially interfere with brainwaves anyway ? In the future the chess organizations could potentially have a device that reads the minds of the contestants and prints the relevant contents up on the web so that people can see which moves the gm's are considering - cheats would be instantly banned!

Avatar of comradedew

Having them in an isolated small room with 100 cctv watching them wouldn't be such a bad idea either...

The only thing you should always try to cheat is life and the system, screw every1 else as long as you can make millions of $

Avatar of Conflagration_Planet

If it is proven, they should be banned for life the first time.

I remember being impressed at how well Sebastien Feller was playing at the Olympiad. Frown

In the case of players caught cheating their home page is labeled accordingly abd their name is added on the list of players banned for cheating. No such thing happened in the case of Yelena Dembo.
