Yes I have noticed that too. I have a soft spot for Russia because my parents emigrated to Israel

from the Soviet Union and I know the Russian language at an excellent level.

Wow you speak Russian too?

Yes it's true. I know Russian very well. I can also read and write not just speak.

Any ideas why they are much better apart from the above?

During the Cold War, chess gained added importance in Russia. Chess provided a mega-metaphor for this psychological war, one that derived added significance from the game's important role in Soviet communist society. The Russians might have lagged behind in military technology or economic competition, but over the chessboard they reigned supreme. Many Russian leaders were avid chess players, which is something to note. They were constantly on the lookout for new talent, which certainly paid off at the championships. (:

Not to discredit other nations, however. India, Ukraine, Israel, the U.S., and many others are not to be ignored in the world of chess. They may not have the common knowledge of Russia, but they still hold power over the chessboard.

Do they give their chess prodigies better coaching and mentoring than in other countries?

Definitely Russians are to be appreciated for their achievements in chess

It is because Russians like chess more, so they are naturally the best at it compared to other countries. The USA is the best at baseball, basketball, and American football because Americans enjoy playing it. Same goes for how China is number one for ping pong, ect.

Yeah, do you see any nation with skill in cricket that could compare to India? I don't think so.

How about England, WI, Aus, NZ, Pakistan, Bangladesh. Most former colonial states play cricket

Yes, but the top player (Virat Kohli) is from India along with (I believe) the top team in the sport. But yeah, I suppose saying no other country could compare was an overstatement on my behalf.

Of course, this should all be taken with a grain of salt, as someone who doesn't follow sports closely, let alone cricket.

First of all Soviet Union had very good educational system and yes chess was supported by government too. But it is pointless without players with potential. In Soviet Union people were very interested in reading and chess. Why? Because it was hard to get books and life didn't provide entertainment like in west. Western children don't like sitting at the board for 5 hours long because they can spend their time better. Some time ago Karpov gave an interview where he said that in his town they had a chess club where workers played till night after hard working days. Chess was their only entertainment. It is not hard to be best in the world If you have such people enthusiasm.

My request for my Russian friends:

Please appeal to your booksellers, especially my-shop.ru and chitai-gorod, and ask them

to arrange international shipping for their books. Thank you.

Update: Ok, I see that the website books.ru has a large selection of books in Russian

and it ships to Israel. I will try to order books from them and hopefully things will turn out well.
