Music and distractions: help or hinderance while playing chess?

My reason for asking this question is I observe some guys playing really well despite the fact their earphones with on with music...noises such people in conversation and vehicles passing by are no distraction for them. Personally, I need complete silence for maximum concentration. Comment please.
