MUTUAL BLINDNESS: HANGING QUEEN FOR FIVE MOVES, NEITHER OF US NOTICED

So um... I'm just going to say that I don't know if I've ever laughed so hard while analyzing. I get to the analysis thinking I played great, but the engine was like "4 BLUNDERS, 3 MISTAKES"... I thought my game was flawless, until I realized what I had done...

So an FM and I had mutual blindness for 5 moves straight... MY QUEEN ON a5 WAS HANGING FOR SO LONG AND I MOVED IT THERE SO CONFIDENTLY. Even Botez couldn't live up to this level of blundering... True quality chess my friends

What gets me is that after 17. Nxc5, he took the knight on c5 with his knight on b3... I've never laughed so much at such idiocy from both of us

Besides that I played great happy.png

This will give us patzers so much encouragement ! ✌️😎

What's even funnier is that during the game I was worried like "AH HE HAS QE1 I MISSED THAT UGH"...

Even in blitz at this level, you never expect both players to miss a hanging queen for so long

llama51

Yeah, that must be extremely rare.

I've had similar oversights when threaten something like mate in 1, and then I start calculating... of course all my calculations assume my opponent defends the mate, until at some point I forget I'm threatening mate... and when they don't defend it, I don't even notice.

For me it's usually something like that, but I've never had it happen for 5 moves lol.

I'm guessing you were so focused on c5 that you missed that the knight was also covering a5? Either way, thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed seeing that you are human. Even if you don't make laughable blunders nearly as often as me. tongue.png

oh god i didn't see it either wttffff

FarewellToKings2112

Well in blitz it's always the instinctive move. I would prefer to move another piece, not play Rb8, so after Bd2, I instinctively start looking at other ways to defend the pawn (i.e. Qa5). I guess I played it so confidently that I didn't see it and neither did my opponent because of the confidence I had. And after we both don't see it for one move, we don't see it at all if we don't think twice about it

sndeww

Dude I think is stronger players don’t see it because pattern recognition working against us

I was so ready like

i am a chess expert

i will spot the queen blunder

*didn’t see it*

*replays game*

*still didn’t see it*

Reads “Qa5”

OHHHHHHHH

FarewellToKings2112

I mean Qa5 would in any other case be the best, it's just the position that makes the queen hang so much harder to see I guess

sndeww

Like I said pattern recognition working against us

Aragorn

WOW!!!!!!!!!

NoLife_Chess

It's because the knight is rarely on b3. You subconciously think it's either on c3 or d2, so pattern recognition makes you think the queen is safe is there, as if the b3 knight wasn't actually there.

So to become FM strength, I have to know thematic moves in many positions, and make them with confidence, even if they are blunders? Good to know.
