My bumpy road to 1714 USCF rated.

Hi there,I'm Amogh Tripathi. I have had quite a journey in the world of USCF. The following should explain the bumpy road I've had to 1714 USCF rated.

Beginner: It all started with a Non-profit organization in Cleveland,Ohio.I started attending classes in a local academy. Then one day,my first ever instructor Mike Reeves ( Mr. Reeves) came up to me and told me about a chess tournament that was coming up and it would be good place for me to start my USCF journey. So I played in it,i tied for 1st. Yayhappy.png. Then, later that night I got an email saying that i was rated 660 USCF. Later, when I did some research,i found out that there were many chess tournaments that happened like every week. All USCF rated!surprise.png I was so excited. This is were my journey started.

Beginner/Intermediate level: I got to 900 by scholars mating everybody. But when I started to play 1200,1100 and even 1000 rated players,I realized scholars Mate didn't work,so I had to start playing some serious chess. I started to play some standard openings with 1.D4. I got some easy wins in the queens gambit which increased my rating to 1218 USCF. I was super happy that I was getting better slowly but truly. One day,I played  NM Micheal Joelson and he told me that "The best way to get better is to play 1.E4." so I took that advice and I switched up all my openings. Danish gambit as white and Sicilian dragon as black. And indeed, the advice helped. My rating went from 1218 to 1416.I also got some brilliant games with 1.E4.

Reaching Higher levels: After reaching 1600,I was desperate to reach the advanced level around 1700-2200. In one tournament,I met a 2002 USCF rated player named Juan Orellana. He said that"crazy gambits will not work at the advanced level." So after thinking about it,Istarted playing attacks instead of gambits. I was really attracted towards the urusov attack. When I started playing it,my rating went from 1587 to 1765.

Going up,up and beyond: I have always wished to be 2000+ rated and I will continue to achieve this goal by working hard on opening,middle-game and endgame skills, doing tactics and learning from games that I lose versus higher rated opponents.

Hopefully you enjoyed my bumpy road to 1714 USCF rated.

                                                       See you in part 2

"NM Micheal Joelson and he told me that "The best way to get better is to play 1.E4." ". This is b.llshit though, both d4 and e4 are totally fine, they just lead to different kind of games.

birdsunited123

how long did it take you?

CaruanaVirus

where are your mentioned brilliant games with 1.e4? all i saw was some low quality mess of a game against a 1500. post the brilliant ones so we can see them!

Congratulations and continued success. Here is a video from GM Yasser Seirwan who started playing (and losing) games when he was 12. Of course, he went on to much greater success and by the time he was 20 he was a GM.

I think you might get a kick out of how he talks about some of his earliest games. The audio gets better a few minutes in. (I just love this video! And it actually has some great checkmating advice later in it.)

How long have you been playing to reach that level.

My Rating reached 1722 in Jan 2020 and it took almost 1 Year and 9 Months for me to reach from Unrated to 1722. I started chess in 04/2018.

Thanks for your response.

I stayed around 800-900 for 6 years, quit for two years, and now I'm back, and don't seem to be playing at that level anymore. But of course who knows, 1900s still suck
