I don't know of any situation in which Chess.com give diamond memberships for absolutely no reason; the diamond membership prizes recently have been for achieving certain accomplishments, not doing absolutely nothing.

I may be wrong, but I believe the free diamond memberships used to entice back inactive members are only temporary. I suppose you could do as you say, go inactive for a few months in the hopes of getting one of these, but it would probably only last a month before you have to pay again, and the cycle would have to be repeated ad nauseam.

The way I found out is...I went back through my archive and found players who haven't been to the site in YEARS and lo and behold, they are now Diamond members. Too bad they don't even know it! HeHe.

Pretty sure most of those were to accounts that were idle for at least months and most likely for over a year and weren't long memberships.

UPDATE: Contrary to my original post, Diamond Memberships are worth their weight in, well, DIAMONDS!! Given the amount of joy, instruction and fun I get from CHESS.COM, the money I pay is a pittance and a supreme value! Not to mention, new features are being added all the time for no additional price. Value like that is tough to come by in today's world. 100% I will renew my membership when the time comes.
