My percentile isn't matching up with my level of play

My rating is 1033 in rapid but it says I'm in the 75th percentile in ratings.  From all the videos I watch online of chess content, they would talk about somebody rated 1033 and say they're an absolute scrub.  I'm totally fine with being a scrub if I am one right now, but why is it saying I'm in the 75th percentile?  From my understanding, that means that my rating is better than 75% of players.  Can somebody explain this to me?

It just means that there are a lot of people on chesscom who have accounts and either 1. don’t play much, 2. are not serious about it, or 3. tried chess, still have an account, but gave up and are no longer active, or 4. are still new to the game.

Yeah, technically the average player for bullet, blitz, and rapid is rated below 1000 on this website... so sure, you didn't read it incorrectly if it says you're better than 75% of people here.

But... there are a lot of beginners who pump up this percentile.

The average adult "club" player in the US is around 1500-1600 USCF. These are people who have typically read at least one chess book, have traveled to OTB tournaments (which cost money and time) and have played for many years... in other words it's understandable why among this crowd "average" is a lot higher. And yes, compared to them you're not very good yet happy.png You're beyond beginner level, and making progress, but you're still a "scrub" (as you put it).

I think that for FIDE ratings, there is a rating floor of 1000.

75% compares with accounts on chess.com (only active accounts are taken in consideration if I am not mistaken). Llama compares with the average club player and that is valid of course. But you can also chose to compare with all people who know the rules, including the ones that are not at a chess site. Then your percentile is a lot higher then 75%!

The vast majority of beginners plays 10|0 rapid because it's the standard time control on this site. This means that the playerbase for this particular time control is weaker compared to other time controls or even other sites. In fact the average rapid here appears to be just around 800, making a 1000 effectively "above average".
