My School Just Banned Chess.com

The biggest problem for you, as young people today, is that the amount of misinformation you are being bombarded with far outweighs the actual truth. You are having a very hard time discerning between the two because you have not yet been grounded in the basics of Math, English and History. Everybody hates Math. Maths, to our European friends. Math will save your life. Watch Red Planet. You can apply math to almost any situation in your life to make a wise decision. Knowing math will help you play better chess. Always take into account the source of your information.

I would highly recommend that you all start using spreadsheets. Once you program all of the math into the spreadsheet you don't have to worry about the formulas. You can just pull out results. I have extensive spreadsheets on all areas of my life. I would also urge you all to think about going into technical and programming fields. Less and less people in the United States are getting into the high Tech arena. India is far surpassing us in that. Then listen to Mike Rowe. You don't have to go to college to make a lot of money. You do, however, need to be educated.

I probably shouldn't say this, I can see the school administrators jumping up-and-down right now. High school won't really ever teach you much. I quit and got a GED and then started going to college. Then I started learning something. You won't actually learn anything in college, but the point is that college teaches you to teach yourself. Most people do not ever use the degrees that they earn in college in the real world. It's the simple fact that you have the degree and you have proof that you can do the work. That's when you start making the money.

I hated high school. We may have a generation gap, but I know exactly what ya'll are going through. There has been a lost generation ever since generations were invented 200,000 years ago. Keep being rebel chess players. 😁

It may be due to the amount of people drawn to chess.com

What State, is your school in?

If it is in Iowa, for example, then we can Google "Iowa, School bans the use of Chess.com."

But I have inkling this is just a lie!?

MASTER_ELVIN
I live in Iowa too

Plus my school has free times and during lunch we can get on our phones and play chess or anything. This is Middle School

Just let them ban sites. Eventually it will catch up to them. I learned that if they block too many sites, the computers will lag, and the whole school will go down.

well then why isn't there a proportional growth increase to daily user numbers in the Forums?  percentage of active users that make their way to the forums is identifiable based on a particular percentage of users.  applied to the new users, it should translate to a certain number based on probability

When that doesn't happen, then it raises a red flag regarding numbers being disclosed.  makes us ask questions.  makes us ask who is really here?

schools dont want us to play chess on our phones so our phones get taken away or have to be locked up in our bags off

so we are not playing chess in school.  anyone who says otherwise is out of touch.  many places can't use phones in class or on campus

It would not be easy to find an article about what a school bans, it probably varies between every school

Schools, colleges, and universities all regulate behaviors that distract from instruction. Sometimes this is done as general policy by the administration, but in most cases it varies from teacher to teacher. My university encourages me to have a cell phone policy, but I don’t have one on my syllabus. While many instructors find student cell phone use distracting, I encourage students to use their phones, tablets, and laptops to fact-check things I assert in lecture, or other sorts of quick reference. These devices become an integral part of class discussions.

The beginning of Andrei Codrescu, The Poetry Lesson (2010) is interesting in this light. He describes the first day of a writing class as he and his students challenge one another in discussion with Google an active tool used both on the podium and the desks.

Fun and emotional involvement improve learning and retention. The history teacher at my school made the subject a blast. I wish I had him - we had a choice between history and sociology and I  chose sociology. And then I got to hear about this history teacher and his enthusiasm and daily challenges.  If (in any subject) the teacher is bored, the students probably will be, too.

Chess.com is not permitted in many many schools across the world.  That is why school aged children are not playing chess or discussing chess during the school day

at our school we cannot use our smartphones while on campus.  so if students are not increasing the traffic or daily user activity on chess.com , then what is driving up the numbers so much?  Take a guess...  that unspoken "something" that goes unnamed on chess.com

Trfulton25

Sometimes a distraction during a long school day is nice.
