there are a lot of simpler books about chess.

for I beginner I've heard great things "the complete Idiots guide to chess"

as for me personally, I have a little reinfeld book that has taught me chess from being to rank beginner, to where I am now. it is book that speaks deeply about chess is won.

the only problem might be the chess notation which is in the old style- and many people have problem with "descriptive notation".... but if you were working on understanding 'my system' - understanding the old notation shouldn't be THAT big of a barrier.

I really think it's worth while to read and try to understand Part I, where he talks about opening principles, exchanges and inter-mezzo. I'm a beginner myself, and taking the time to think about the lessons in those few pages really improved my game.. It helps you to understand how those small variations in advantage/disadvantage during the opening come about. It's only a few pages, but it's a wealth of beginner chess knowledge.. This may be a bit parabolic, but I think it's a stepping stone to a deeper understanding of the game.
