Are you sure it's "well out of copyright" or did you just make that up? I'm no expert but the rule of thumb at Librivox.org* is that anything written or copyrighted after 1920 in the USA is still under copyright. I see you're in the UK so maybe your copyright laws are similar to the USAs and maybe not, I just don't know.
BTW I'm just asking, I'm not out to rain on anyone's parade or help enforce US or international copyright laws, which seem to be getting out of hand IMHO
*Librivox.org has volunteer readers convert works in the public domain into free audiobooks, and I'm guessing they know a thing or 2 about US copyright laws
