Same thing that happened to Leo Messi, one average season (for his levels, important clarification) and there was already will-he-ever-come-back & is-he-finished talk all over the place.

Carlsen just crushed Mamedyarov in a miniature as Black! Mamedyarov was on a roll until this game.

Carlsen's last 17 games: 7 wins 10 draw 0 losses. Every draw loses rating points for him and yet he's gained +10 rating points this month.

Carlsen will be going into the last round 1/2 point up right?

Probably, although technically Sjugirov could theoretically catch him although he's currently struggling as Black against Kramnik.

Sjugirov lost to Kramnik. Kramnik played really well.

Tomorrow's game will probably be Carlsen (#1) -Kramnik (#2), and it will probably be a draw, especially if they play a Berlin. The excitement of the Swiss is still looking very chalky. Maybe these guys really do deserve their ratings?

In the live ratings, Magnus is 2844, more than 43 points higher than Kramnik at #2. Less than 43 rating points separate #2 from #13 in the world.

Kramnik had already been upfloated on a previous round. Isn't someone else with the same # of points going to play Magnus ? Last year's winner Chinese player Yu Yangi ?

TurdStoneFromTheSun

It's either Kramnik-Carlsen or Yu-Carlsen

If Kramnik and Carlsen haven't played, they should be paired.

Hicetnunc, it doesn't matter whether he's been paired up before. The highest rated player in the next group should play the lowest rated in the higher group. The exception is color allocation, but that works in favor of a Carlsen-Kramnik pairing in this case.

It seems likely that everyone has ups and downs. I tend to admire consistent play, resilient counterplay, unstoppability when in a zone, and above all how a player carries himself/herself as a human being. Many players have impressed me in these areas, and as far as I can tell, Carlsen is no exception.
