I've played over 100,000 blitz and bullet since 1998. My OTB rating climbed from low 1400s to high 1900s, and then dropped back into the 1800s.

This speed chess is probably why my OTB is below 2100.

This is surprising and very commendable !  I have to ask ... was blitz and bullet all you were doing during this huge rating jump ?

Absolutely not. I study tactics, endgames, positional play, go over master games, and spend a lot of time teaching elementary skills to children. I got better, I believe, despite the blitz.

The blitz may have helped some aspects of my game over the long haul, but the time spent playing detracted from more productive activities.

Use your game analyzer scrotum romancer. Isn't that what you threatened me with? Cheers

Blitz can help, but it might not be the most efficient way to improve your games. Who you play also matters alot, I get nothing out of playing 1600-1700s here otb, but I will get more if I am facing gm, im, fm nms in blitz.

fast chess wont improve your classic otb chess/understanding

it helps u play through serious time pressure but dont play it like to win on time.

blitz is a mixture of rapid and speed play under time pressure which gives the cool to stay calm under time pressure. u think about ur moves fast or ull run out of time, play too bad and ur checkmated.

at beginner level, blitz is just shooting random moves( like i defeated stockfish in 10 sec bullet) but as u go to intermediate, ull be checkmated in 10 moves using only 1 sec with few blunders.

Blitz is rapid+bullet.at beginner level play like u play rapid with 10 min time controls . as u go on learn to effectively premove and handle time pressure by playing blitz with increment. Good luck. tis helped me becoming a better chess player. good luck for all going to participaate in premium cash prize tournament(as long as u let me win).thumbdown.png

Blitz is smoke and mirrors, and every gambler knows when to keep playing for a clock win.

Guys , I just started chess few days back .now I am confused which format to go with .

Should I play 30 min , 10 min match more or practice 5min or 3min matches.

Which is the best way to learn?
