so I watched queen's gambit and that led me to start playing chess. I've been hooked for the past 7 months and the highest rating I've achieved was only like 900. I feel as though, I'm making little progress. over the past two months, I've been hovering around the same rating and I don't know how to push past this rating barrier. I have some basic knowledge on openings, my tactics are okay and I can come up with great defensive plays but I feel very weak at times when it comes to attacking. Also, I would love to learn how to capitalize more often when I have a superior position advantage. if any of you would like to look at some of my games and give me tips I would appreciate it, thanks.

That was a great tactic move 25 against GinYelo!

Your opening on your last loss to Buffaloman was pretty bad, 1…na6. Follow principles…knight usually go to the center in the opening. Try to get all your pieces active and castle as fast as you can.

There is a video series by NM Robert Ramirez I like to recommend, it’s free, over 100 of them each about 15-20 minutes long. He has lots of good simple tips. Start on the first topic that is unfamiliar. I actually started at video 48 and learned mate with knight and bishop, which I never learned.

At this level tactics are most important.

This is how I improved, maybe it helps you too. 1. Did puzzles everyday for the last eleven months. I only do them here and the amount they let me for free. That is four regular ones (rated) per day, one puzzle rush per day (at first it was five puzzles in one try and as my tactics improved number also got higher and now I do 20 minimum) and 2 individual ones where you can pick a pattern. Later they added puzzle rush battle and it improved my speed and there my average score is maybe 15. So at total I did approximately 45 (sometimes more, sometimes less) puzzles per day in less than 30 minutes each day. 2. Magnus trainer app helped me get rid (not totally yet unfortunately) of one move blunders and improved my vision. It also has great lessons but I just read them all and didn't studied them. 3. Spent atleast 4 hours per week (again half an hour per day) watching my favorite content creators (chess related) wheter they stream or release a video on yt. It was entertaining but I believe i picked up a lot just by watching them. If I notice I struggle against something or have problem with certain part of the game I look up for a solution presented by them. Only if they don't have anything devoted to that I try to find it somewhere else. Out of everything I have watched more than 85% was purely fun like sub battles, guess the elo and similar and only less than 15% was educational videos like agadmator, Daniel Naroditsky, Building habits. 4. At rating of 1300 I decided to pick an opening, one for black and one for what. Since then I play Vienna and KID in every single rated game. Before that I played Ruy Lopez, Sicilian, e5 as response to e4 and what not. I analyzed one game per day. At 1500 I decided to play only one rated game per day and to analyze that one. Sometimes I broke and still break that rule, but I still try to stick with it. If I have a need to play more I just play unrated ones or blitz/bullet. I would always focus on rapid and improve there first. Later once when my rating difference between rapid and blitz becomes big I easily catch up. That's pretty much it. This way helped me to reach rating of 1800. Its not perfect and has many flaws for sure but it worked for me. I wish you best of luck!
