Nepo - it's just embarrassing for the game now.

Wish Nepo played Sicilian as Black instead of Petroff's. At least, he would have had the excuse of making blunders within the context of very rich, sharp tactical lines. It happens. But this way, it looks a lot worse, because he's playing solid openings such as Petroff's or English, yet finds a way to blunder in these games. These types of openings are often taught to intermediate players who're trying to get more tournament experience under their belt, and the reason they're taught is that they are solid, and that it's harder to lose with them. Yet, Nepo plays them and he manages to lose, and it really looks bad for him. I feel bad for the guy, but honestly think he needs to cultivate much more patience and subtlety in his game. He will need those qualities if he wants to become a world champ one day.

A more sullen truth has to be acknowledged…we face another three years of chess under the Age of Carlsen. Not saying that Mags isn’t super fab but…it would be nice if someone put the fear of Caissa into him.

This is normal.  When one person dominates for a long period of time, people want someone new.

Plot twist: Alexandra Botez is next world champion. Followed by her sister Andrea.

And suddenly the Botez Gambit becomes mainstream.

Yup. I never found Ruy Lopez terribly interesting. With Carlsen most likely keeping his title, we're going to see more and more of them, as he loves playing those lines sad.png. Would be nice to see French or Pirc or Alekhine or Sicilian or any other defense in those games. So tired of Ruy.

Nepo's first loss was understandable. It was a long (most moves in world championship history) and complicated game, with precise moves by both players, and he blundered in exhaustion. It also helped that they had played a string of draws before Round 9.

But his two losses after that have been pretty ridiculous and sad. In Round 10, Magnus was effectively offering him a draw, but he refused and lost. And of course the most recent loss was due to a blunder worthy of a 1500 rated player. I really don't think that games like that reflect well on chess in general or will attract beginners to learn the game.

I disagree with the last part.  I think beginners seeing someone challenging for the title and making that kind of mistake will help them grow to enjoy the game.  It reminds them that even at that level they are human.

Hmm, well, I think everyone is quietly in agreement that the sooner this match is over, the better.  The marathon game was interesting because it was so long, but on the whole the chess has been lop-sided and Nepo has flopped. He's nowhere near the performance of Caruana or Karjakin - neither of whom set the board on fire but they didn't crash and burn either.

I know some people are hoping Nepo rallies for at least one victory in the final act but does anyone really think that's coming?  As he said himself today, he's now playing to not blunder.  Yeah, it's a bit embarrassing.  Back to that word again.
