We're trying to fix this.

Yes; by the end of the week, nobody shall ever have to listen to Pink Floyd again, thanks to chess.com.

You don't like Pink Floyd, TB?

I actually think they're okay, but for some reason I can never stop myself from making fun of them.  Hold out from my years spent listening to lots of No Wave & assorted punk, I guess.

It's hard for me not to be critical of "classic rock", just because all the good stuff got overplayed. I mean, some of that stuff was really good! But after decades of listening to it, there was bound to be a rebellion from it.

Avatar of theoreticalboy

Totally.  Hell, I even get sick of things myself and swear off them for good.  But, a lot of music stays with you, and if it does, it's usually for a reason.

I'm pretty happy with the amount of music I know about nowadays.  Actually I've been counting down an entirely frivolous top 100 songs list (one per artist), and someone asked me "100 songs?  Do you listen to them all all of the time?"  But there's no need, because what you really love is always there when you want it to be.

Ian Anderson (of Jethro Tull) stated in an interview years ago that he was dismayed at the plethora of classic rock stations in the U.S. He went on to say, "play the new music, from the new artists!".

Eddie Vedder, in the movie "Hype" says he understands how people get to the point of hating songs. He said he's even been to the point where he feels, "if I hear that song again......".

I can do favorite CDs, or musicians, but top 100 songs is far too difficult for me. I still don't have any idea how people write 'greatest games of chess history' books! That would be something for Diderot, or Samuel Johnson to makeLaughing

So true. I totally agree with Jethro Tull's quote.

I find favourite albums to be much harder than songs, actually, and favourite musicians is such a baffling list I've never even approached it (how on earth does one judge Mogwai against Shonen Knife, for example?)  Though the key to such an endeavour is to accept that all order is going to be abitrary, and it's just an excuse to write a little about songs you love Wink

Made me laugh! You are so right. All rankings of art are all subjective.

Where I live (Chicago area-no-I'm not in the mob), there are numerous countdowns of "the greatest songs of all time".......every holiday weekend.

Ugh.

Avatar of theoreticalboy

And why not?  Lists are arbitrary, yes, but they're a fun way of analysing your own commitment to things.  The only really objectionable thing is the use of the term "greatest," which is obviously nonsensical, but so long as you view them as frivolous fun, they're a fine source of entertainment!

I really like making lists, and amongst family and friends I sometimes push them into making lists as well. It's a lot of fun listening to their lists of favorites. But, I do hate the "expert's lists", or most popular lists. Totally meaningless to me, and just not fun. Like, how can Citizen Kane always be the best film ever made? Or Stairway to Heaven be the best song all-the-time?
