The update seems fine to me. Book pieces, tournament board, light background and I'm happy with the look of it. It does most of what I would like it to do functionally, as well.

To answer your question: "So Tactics hasn't gone anywhere. - how is Tactics broken?"  all of the controls are missing. ... skip to next tactic, forward, backward.

Do you intend to put them back in?

I agree with all who have complained of the new IOS update: VERY UNHAPPY WITH IT!

Here's why:

1. More difficult to use compared to previous version. Previous version was simple and intuitive; this one has too many "bells & whistles,"

2. Too slow...and that's a disaster for 3-minute blitz games.

3. Sometimes I hear a sound when I'm put in check...most times I don't, and that's big when playing a blitz game.

4. I'm using a custom board (dark), but still can't seem to replicate the old board pieces.

I know there's no way you'll go back to the previous version, but this was a serious DOWNGRADE guys. Bells & whistles I could care less about; functionality is what is most important when using an app to okay chess online.

This version is an improvement in every aspect. I'm dumbfounded by how many "complaints" people make up, especially regarding issues that don't actually exist. Anyway, good on you Chess.com, the new app works much better in every aspect.

I lost two games because my board vision is horrid with "fancy" pieces. Found someting acceptable through custom and won a miniature.

A lot is pleasing in the app, but too many chess piece sets remind me of GameKnot and other substandard sites.

Wow! I wish that I'd said that. Perfectly explains most of the available chess sets and board colors.

It is neither horrible nor excellent. In some respects, it is the best most functional iOS chess app ever designed. In other respects, it is a paltry imitation of the old chess.com app, which had far more functionality.

For playing chess, it is much improved (except for the themed graphics--custom is the ONLY reasonable alternative). For chess.com's social function, the app is non-existent, and thus a huge step backwards.

Perhaps for the iPad, but on iPhone it's kind of limiting. I'm already cutting down the time I spend on this app and it's been 2 days. I would even PAY to have the old app back.

Um...yeah. Anyway, I'm not sure, based on some of the comments above, that it's super-clear how to "clean up" the interface via themes... So here's my how-to.

Here's my own no-nonsense theme:

Pretty distraction-free, right? All I do is go to the menu (top left button), and then select Settings, and then Themes...

Now actually tap on Custom to go into the customization menu...

Now you can mix and match from the four sets of options for pieces, boards, backgrounds and sound effects. Pieces for instance, includes a lot of options (you may have to scroll UP to see the older ones)...

And that's all there is to it, as far as "look and feel" goes...

I don't see any options to access messages, go to your groups, check the forums, or see your tournaments. How can all these options be missing? This is bad.

All those things are planned - some already in design... and not counting the old app bringing up the Tournaments webpage in an embedded browser, that stuff is all new functionality for iOS.

Chess.com staff please advise: how do we skip to the next tactic (this used to be easy)? Are you intending to bring the missing functionality of tactics back? A lot of people are asking and we would appreciate answers please.
