The ads are optional. Everyone who sees them has chosen to see them.
But I do remember a couple ads that could have stood to have their volume dialed down a few hundred decibels . . .
@ads that make noise are, in my mind, a different ball of wax than visual pop ups. Those are simply discourteous to the user. People use their computers as phones with programs like Skype. They use them to listen to music. They use them to stream videos. It is one thing to display ads over the web page you're visiting, I get that people have to pay for bandwidth. However, it is a completely different kettle of fish to have an add make noise. That to me is grossly inconsiderate of the user.
if you're not paying a membership fee, you're not a customer, you're a free rider. If you don't like the site enough to pay, deal with it. Or agree that you like the content enough to support the site.
I completely agree.
Quit complaining so much about the ads popping up. Well since you don't think you should pay, there is a easy solution besides quiting this great site.
That is doing what the astronauts do to fix anything that fails on their ships.
Take a roll of duct tape and just put tape over the area on your screen where the ads pop up.
What a great solution.
NO MORE ADS.
IMHO
What a dumb and arrogant answer. Thanks!
Thanks, staff member erik for the tip.
But here we come some really arrogant posts. Not what I expected from chess.com community. But then again, only few love to troll. Oh well

I think that's a bit unfair. The duct tape solution works fine for me, the only problem being that it might be a bit of a dust/fluff trap over a long period of time so I'm thinking of a removable cardboard sleeve or similar arrangement as an alternative.

No, arrogance is thinking you deserve something for nothing rather than be grateful for the fact that you are allowed to be a free rider.

You used your 1st post ever to revive a thread dead for four years?
Melicious = a person named Mel, considered delectable by some.

How do you know which ads are malicious?

I guess what I was hinting at was that you probably don't know which ads might be malicious and which ads are merely annoying. If you're worried about malvertising attacks from ad servers, you should probably just install an ad blocker...And run something like NoScript so that you're not running unnecessary Javascripts...And make sure Java isn't running in your browser...And either uninstalling Flash Player or at least setting it up as click-to-play...And not using your Administrator account on a normal basis.

It's no longer an issue since I started using Adblock Plus with Opera. That's progress for ya!
