Be patient -- don't play the first move you look at, "if you find a good move, look for a better one!"

Be thorough -- When considering a move, look only for your opponent's most annoying response.  Don't look for the move you want to see him play.  If his best response is too strong, don't waste any more time looking at the move.

Be strong willed -- if you can ignore your opponent's threat, then do, don't only react to your opponent.

In the opening put one pawn in a center square (central space is important for future mobility).  In the opening move each piece (non-pawns) once and usually to a square that influences the center or attacks an enemy piece that does.  And in the opening, only capture if it does something specifically good for you because capturing for no reason will pull his pieces closer to the center (when they re-capture) and speed up his development.
