i've never played any online chess, and am wondering what would be a good first event to play in for someone who is new to online. i am 1700 USCF OTB, and have lots of questions about online play. such as:

- are there any FAQ/guides (i.e., "intro to playing online")?

- how is time managed, and how do you deal with potential problems like computer crashes or broadband outage in the middle of a game, etc.?

- how prevalent is cheating? i know chess.com puts a lot of effort into trying to detect and punish cheaters, but it seems to me that this would be very likely to occur in online play.

Can’t prevent cheating, but if you lose to a cheater you can hope they’re picked up by the site and you are refunded your lost points.

If you’re internet runs out during a live game there is a grace period of time before you lose the game. So if you disconnect for say 30 seconds then come back online you’re safe.

Best way to learn is to get stuck in and find out about the site as you go along!
