I,m with jon1d on this-there is no excuse for a lack of basic manners- also there is a lack of basic chess etiquette. When overwhelmingly down on material it is a insult to your opponnent to "hang on" possibly hoping for a slip
No courtesy!
Maybe your opponent doesn't speak english.
Maybe you've started talking to your opponent after the clock is running and they consider you rude for trying to distract them during the game.
Maybe your opponent used to be friendly but ran into too many people who like to swear and insult. (one might be too many)
Maybe your opponent is a child and has been taught not to talk to strangers.
What are we supposed to take off when we greet a lady?
Dont give me twat comments ... If I am taking the initeative to respecting you at the beggining of a game than you should be obliged to return it.
I am not bothered that much just wanted to know the reason why would people do it in here?
If you dont know than respectfully go piss off somewhere else.

thanks all valid points,
I still belive that very basic acqnoulgment would be benefitial to the whole experience. Loosing in chess is not a nice thing since a lot of energy goes per game so it is understandable if someone rage quits but the inital greeting I would have thought was mandatory especially when some one takes the initiative.
Maybe I'm unnecessary taking this too much to heart :p
I have noticed that there is a lack of courtesy among players.

I guess you didn't have to look far to notice the lack of courtesy.
Wait, this isn't a finishing school is Switzerland? And all this time I thought I wasn't making any friends because I'm still learning the language. I need to get a refund from Rosetta Stone.

Agreed. Who's standard of "courtesy" and "manners" should we be using?

You're right, there really is no courtesy
Courtesy must be mututal if you'd like to ignore thats fine but I am not to take someones sarcasm or insult.

lol
Great Point.

Perhaps the refined scholar would like to take my comment and show that
1) it was an insult
2) it was directed at him
There's plenty of courtesy on this site, some so extensive that it takes inappropriate forms (but that's another story). If you say good luck to me, the chances are very good that I will not see it (depending upon which of three devices I am using to connect to the site--two require additional steps to see chat). If I see it, I will reply in kind unless it is during a 1 0 or 3 0 game (the vast majority of my games here).

jon1d you are new here so I'll just tell you that when you post someting on these forums you should expect answers like this (besides helpful ones) because there are many people here who comment on everything - most of it is just good natured fun (like goldendog answer) so if you dont like it - just ignore it and read comments that might be helpful.
As to your question - ofcourse it's kinda obvious for many ppl to return courtesy but this is big site so you find all kinds of jerks (or ppl who might be just tired - who knows?) and not returning your greeting sometimes isnt the biggest problem - U may find ppl who insult you, your family, dog, whatever - IGNORE, BLOCK THEM if you dont like it. If some1's especially rude you can report them to staff - they deal with extreme cases.

haha I can asure you that my reply was directed at you aswell old chap since they were ever so similar.
dear me, what do you want a badge for your brilliant wit.
... anyways thanks for the replies guys, as I said, I recently joined and now I understand that this attitude seems to be a norm at chess.com
see ya out there in the battlefield XD
jon, is saying "piss off" to someone interested enough in answering your blog...courteous? Start practicing what you preach before giving us lessons on good manners!
echecs I think he was quite right to say 'piss off' coz as you should know many people on these forums post for the fun of it not because they need/want help. And in this situation jon as a new guy asked a question (which you and others seen countless times) and goldendog started to make fun of him instead giving normal reply - I'm kinda used to it by now but it might be irritating for new people.

I have recently just joined and even though havent played a lot of games thus can not speak for everyone I have noticed that there is a lack of courtesy among players.
Im not after conversations but when someone greets you and wishes you good luck would be polite to at least wish the same.
Is that demanding too much?
