No more Immortal-Gladiator?

There's no more IG? No more "my debut game"? No more  ego? Dang, that was gonna be my morning read. The threads were epic. Unfortunately he just wouldn't listen. Not surprised he was banned (that's what happened, right?), the threads were gone so I'm assuming that's what happened. As I was browsing around  the threads & noticed they were gone I went "hmm, uh huh" & went & checked his account status. It said closed & I know he wouldn't do that voluntarily after all the pleading yesterday. I wish he would've listened. So many here were trying to help him. I hope he learned his lesson. By the way, it was nice of everyone that tried to help him improve even if he betrayed all our trust. It shows there are many good, helpful chessplayers that will go out of their way to help weaker players improve. I don't know how many other sites would have that many members doing that. Y'all did a lot.

MrDamonSmith

He was a member that got caught cheating. He posted a thread apologising & explaining what he did & how it was wrong to do it. He basically confessed everything & pleaded with staff not to ban him. I guess they did it anyway.

Remellion

Huh. Watched this fiasco unfold from the sidelines (since way back when he started that debut game thread, actually. Decided not to help back then as I thought it'd be too emotionally draining and time-consuming.)

I think the ban was necessary to teach a life lesson. You just can't get away with cheating, and apologising does not make the mistake go away.

To all those who helped IG; kudos to you. I believe that he was trying to learn (at first anyway; must've been shocking realising he can't beat most players on here.) You guys have way more patience and tolerance than seems possible for helping him and I respect you for that. Can't get the names out since the threads were closed, but you know who you are. ;-)

MrDamonSmith

Yeah, he confessed everything in detail & said he was very sorry & would never do it again. He regretted letting players down that were trying to help him. I think he does feel bad & might have learned a lesson. How many cheaters would even do that?

MrDamonSmith

I watched it from the start too, way back when he told everybody he was 116-0 & hadn't been playing chess for very long. I was thinking then "wow, he must've played nothing but complete beginners who probable don't fully know the moves yet". He couldn't be very good just from exposing a record like that. But I gave him a bunch of advice about thoroughly learning basic endings, pawn structures, tactics. It was like pulling his teeth to get him to not want to focus on superficial junk. Like wanting to study just openings before he learned more about chess.

...and yeah, it was probably a good lesson for him.

Likhit1

He can just make another acc and be back again.

Daniel90

Forgot to check if he was booted glad he is gone hope he never returns.

MrDamonSmith

He could be reading this huh?

denner

Does anybody else think IG could be Daeth reborn?

stupaud

As I understand it reading the threads (and yes they were epic!), he was caught out as a cheat by some of the people he was playing against, and it was at that point he confessed and pleaded for forgiveness.

I never got the sense he was genuinely remorseful though: his posts veered between self-congratulation (look at me confessing, aren't I noble) and self-pity (why does no-one understand my pain?) but very little self-realization (what's all the fuss about??).

If he does come back on under a different name you might be able to spot him by his strange (almost deliberate) misspellings: "loose" for "lose", "would of" for "would have" and my own favourite, his insistence on calling White & Black "whites & blacks".

Daniel90

Denner90 I thought so when he tried to creat his own oppening and asked him

If he does come back I'm almost 100% certain he will cantact the peaple that were nice to him at first asking for some help and a few games.

He admitted he cheated...... He is decent in that sense!

Unless your the one he cheated on.

JamieKowalski

He admitted after he was caught. I should know... he was cheating in a game against me, and I caught him.

And if you're still feeling sorry for him since he pleaded his case, you should know that even after that, he was still cheating in his other game against me after he confessed.

I am still not sure if IG was genuine or just a very clever, very sophisiticated troll.

When he first started his Debut Game thread a lot of the commentators were convinced he was a troll. Typical exchanges would be something along the lines of:

Commentator: You are a troll.

IG: No I'm not.

Commentator: Yes you are because of this, this & this.

IG: No I'm not because of this, this & this.

This was about the first 30 pages of the thread. After that, through persistence or inertia, most people accepted that he was a 14 year old from SE London. He came across as quite arrogant, self-centred and lacking in social skills but essentially harmless.

It was in the latter part of the Cheaters Read This thread that the suspicions came back that he was a troll after all. His seeming inability to see what he had done wrong, his persistent pleadings and the "shock revelation" that he suffered from Asperger Syndrome: all these gave the impression that he knew the game was up and that he was going to go out in style.

As I said I am still undecided. What do others think?

JamieKowalski

I do not think he was a troll. He was just young, misguided, and lacking in social grace. If he had Asperger's, it certainly didn't help matters.

Daniel90

I believe he is 14 and his story was true but his behavior was certainly that of how a troll would act toward the end it was obvious he was trying to anger most people that started questioning his reason for cheating.

Karura91

Was he really banned?

He is not in the list : http://www.chess.com/cheating?page=1

JMB2010

I don't think he was banned for cheating, he has no cheaters icon and if you search the members list you could still see him there (even though when you click on him it says his account was closed). When cheaters are banned their accounts aren't even there at all.

MrDamonSmith

JamieKowalski, so he had 2 seperate games against you where he was getting you to play some one else other than him? What was the very first thought when you saw the game show up in the thread? Did you think there was some mistake or something?
