Sorry mate,

but I'm under the impression that your opponents didn't quit, they just went offline. A 3days/move time control means you can take up the game later in 3-day-timeframe, so there was no need for you to resign either.

:) Welcome. Yep, i think Torkil has it right. This is like correspondence chess..games are played over time, between 1 day and months, not in one sitting. However you can also play live chess here http://www.chess.com/play/live.html where games are finished in one sitting. The blitz games are fun :)

Remind me how to block someone please..

I agree completely, but I'm not above taking the low road and insulting the insulter.

what is a noob.  and cannot a person tell you they went offline, instead ofmaking a person wait for twenty minutes. there is courtesy factor here . if im a noob, what ever the hell that is . so be it, they sure went out of thifr way to tell me . and any way if one looks at the games, i dont think i quit because of bad play.  the noob?

Noob means newbie.  Judgeofthenight was being a jerk.  Don't pay any attention to him.  The time control for these games is, at the shortest, one move per day.  It's extremely common for players to log off and continue play the next day.  I don't think I've ever completed a game in one sitting.  It's considered acceptable to adjourn a game for the day without any comment to your opponent.  If you'd like to play fast games, you may want to try the Live Chess here.  It's under the 'Play' option on the menu bar atop each Chess.com page.

Lobo, to answer your question, yes you can tell if someone is online or offline. There is an indicator (I cant really describe it) that flashes next to their name on the board if they are online. Also, if you list ALL your games, this same indicator flashes next to anyone who is online.

I have been volunteering as a greeter, which means I am playing unrated games with random new members.  A lot of these games end with my opponent just running out of time after about 5 moves.   Sometimes these players leave comments like "Why don't you move already, you s**k" etc.  A few games turn out really interesting and these make the others worthwhile.

I suppose some people are not clear on the concept of correspondence chess.  I wonder how this could be better communicated to new members.

You can play more than one game at a time, which makes it seem like you're playing more chess while you're waiting.

Also, a good rule of thumb is - if you have to resign to end a game someone else quit, then the game isn't really over.  If they time out, the game is over. :)  You don't have to stay on the page with the game all day.

On behalf of chess.com I must apologise for the moron who somehow found his way to this thread.  I can assure you that of all the chess forums I've been in this is the most enjoyable and by far the most respectful one out there, it's rare to see the display you were forced to.

Now, in regards to your problem, allow me to help you out a little.

First of all, chess.com is primarily a correspondence chess site.  This type of chess is really for people who don't really have time to sit down for 2 hours to play a full length game, and people who appreciate high quality chess rather than 5 minute blunder laden blitz games.  There is also a third category of correspondence players, you and I both fall into a similar category here: Players who play correspondence chess because they like it!  I love chess and where else am I going to be able to play 30 some games at the same time, always having a move to make, and never being rushed to make those moves?  The experience is phenomenal and once you get used to it you'll love it too.

I must suggest you browse around the site a little to get a feel for it.  In order to be the best chess website ever created, chess.com also has to be the most comprehensive.  'Unfortunately' for you, that means orientation can take a few minutes longer than elsewhere.  I promise you it's worth the effort, there is no better chess site.

Hopefully this helps you out a little,

-Matt

For the benefit of new members to this site, it's always better if they familiarise themselves with the accepted procedures, then they might not embarrass themselves and others inadvertently; simple really.Smile
