Non-Internet Chess Clubs--tell us your thoughts about the ones you belong to

Just curious as to how many of you belong to one near you, and what your experience with them is like if you belong to one. I just joined up at one I just happened to find by chance when looking for some chess books. Their membership is $60 a year (I didn't think paying $125 a year was worth the extra $65 when all you got extra was 3 "free" lessons (those lessons didn't seem free to me at all) from an instructor--I must say he knows his chess game though).

I can go anytime I want to pretty much and can still attend any lectures they organize about chess and everything else those who paid the extra $65 can get.

They have monthly tournaments should I want to participate in those (all USCF rated). At the first tournament I participate in I will join the USCF as the club takes care of the paperwork with that. I can't remember the exact membership amount to join the USCF though. The tournament entrants pay $20 ($25 for non club members) to enter and prize money this month is around $500--$200 for first, $100 for second, and $200 split between 1st and 2nd in the unrated class. But tournaments are not the real reason for this post so I must digress.

Tell me about your clubs that you belong to. What do you like about them? What do you not like about them? What is your overall experience with these clubs? I haven't ever belonged to a chess club other than one year in high school which was a while ago, and back then I really didn't care much about the game---it was more something to do. But that is a bit different now. Funny how things change as you get older.

I had to get out of that place though before I busted the bank lol....I went in there to get another book or two and join the club and walked out with said book and membership, a USCF Official Game Time II clock, another chess set (hehe...), a roll up board, and a bag to tote it all in. Gonna need all that stuff anyway so....oh well...

I know the prize money in the tournaments they host aren't large sums....these aren't major tournaments they host. Just had to clarify that!
