I completely agree....and it's even harder playing chess on-line...there are many other things to distract the mind.
not in the zone
This is my trouble with staying focused, yet I continue to pile them on.

Distractions sure hurt. I was in the zone - 6 straight wins and 11W 2D in last 13 games, then played while on vacation at a mountain lake followed by an out-of-state visit to relatives, and am 1 W, 2D, 3L in my last 6 games, 2 of the losses were due to stupid moves I saw were stupid then forgot I had seen them when I chose my move. I hope I'm back in the zone soon!
distractions like the time running out can make you rage quit you have no idea how many times i lost becuase of distractions .

Why should they? It's nice to see some really old threads popping up now and then. It's one of the few issues on which moderation of the forums is not excessive.
I think your asking how to be more focus during the game or being in the zone or in the flow state during that game time.Personally, for me it's an automatic ,you can't control your focus after sometime if your not in flow.Being in the zone is a type of skill which everyone has to be cultivated day by day for better improvement. Thanks!
yesterday i had no work,so i played chess into the small hours. 4 games looked like yielding 3wins comfortable position. but i lost focus,a brilliant move destroyed one game,2 others went through my tunnel vision this is not meant to detract from the victors, they won after all, but to highlight the need for concentration and playing chess while in the best mental state, this is exorcism more than anything else, keep em peeled its a jungle out there......
