Notation In the USA (USCF) ... Write then make the move?

Sort:
USA-Elephant

I am seeing this rule change back and forth in the years.

The question kindly please is requested with backup link/data, and or assertion of notes taken from. The question kindly posed in this year of 2024 is this:

Can we write down our move prior to making the move?

Again not old rules but 2024 (backup supporting documents on such would be huge) as there are too many people saying no and too many people saying yes.

Thank you so much! happy.png

The rule is move, then notate. But there is a TD note that doing it the other can be allowed.

8.1.2 It is forbidden to record the moves in advance, unless the player is claiming a draw according to Article 9.2, or 9.3 or adjourning a game according to Guidelines I.1.1

https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/E012023

The reason is that some engine assisted spectator could signal approval or disapproval.

@Martin_Stahl ... Correct I agree, However where is this rule and it back up supporting doc? Do you have a link etc?

Thank you.

USA-Elephant

@tygxc ... That is FIDE International ... and perhaps I should have referenced local USA Domestic.

Moreso yes I have read to which a person can signal etc per move ... that really makes sense too however sad, it does make 100% sense, yet and again that is FIDE.

I am looking more towards Domestic USA to which I am finding mix reveiws and opinions, therein I am seeking backup docs/links to read etc. to which I felt many here would know in minutes.

Thank you.

That's FIDE, not US Chess. Unless the event is FIDE rated as well, then their regulations don't matter.

@Martin_Stahl ... Yes I agree, more so to which I sorted out herein below this comment.

US Chess rule

US Chess rule 15A requires the player to make
the move first and only then record the move.
However, a commonly used variation (often
unannounced) allows a player using a paper
scoresheet to write the move on the scoresheet
before making the move on the board. (If you
are in the habit of writing your move on the
scoresheet before executing the move on the
board, you are well advised to check whether
this variation is in use for the tournament.) US
Chess rules allow a player to claim a draw by
triple occurrence or the 50-move rule after
moving (determining the move) but before
pressing the clock (completing the move).

FIDE rule

You must make your move on the board first
and only then record the move unless you are
claiming a draw by triple occurrence of
position or by the 50-move rule (or sealing a
move to adjourn a game). If you want to claim
a draw by triple occurrence or the 50-move
rule and you touch a piece before making the
claim, you lose the right to claim the draw.
