Notes vs. Messages?

Is there a difference between posting on someone's notes and sending someone a message? To me they seem like the same thing, but if chess.com designed notes for a specific reason, then what might it be?

Notes appear on the recipients homepage where everyone can see them. Messages are private, allow for longer strings of text and can include chess-diagrams, games pictures etc.

Notes is public, everyone can se them. Messages is private. Its like facebook - notes is like the wall on facebook, private message, and a chat.
