Odd behaviour: Resigning every game

Avatar of reallyrose

There is a player knocking around, usually has 2-5 seeks open for turn-based chess. I was matched with him/her/lemon a few times. I don't want to name names, as I don't know if that is allowed!

He/She/Lemon resigns every game, often after a handful of moves. I really don't see the point. I asked why they were doing it and was told "that's just what I do". 34 games in progress, no doubt after one or two moves. They previously had a rating of over 1400, now it is right down in the 500s!

It really is the oddest behavoir I have come across. Anyone like to come up with a theory?

I believe their account has been closed

Maybe the person tried to se how low he/she could get hes/shes rating...Who knows...

 Hi Reb,

No, it's not closed. I guess there is more than one looper out there!

It may simply be that its far easier to manipulate your rating down than up.  I've seen a couple of other cases where individuals here have had the same goal, some actually reaching a rating of zero.  For example:

 That's amazing; I wouldn't have thought it possible, but there it is.  A perfect zero rating.  That is a lot of effort for . . . well . . . hmmm . . .

The person may have wanted to get a lower rating so that he/she can play lower rating chess players. I don't know why, but that's the best thing that I can come up with.

I bet it's that they probably want to be at the top (bottom) of a list for something - i.e. lowest rated players on this site. I'd also guess that some of these players have a second account for real games because where's the challenge in hitting the resign button?

Sandbagging for a tournament that has a rating cap?

Avatar of hd_thoreau

Maybe they are trying to mess with general statistics, like average rating across the board on the site.

Can someone explain "He/She/Lemon" ?

Just my little joke, I don't know the gender of the person!

Are you suggesting lemons are gender confused?

Well, what colour do parents paint their baby's room when they don't know the gender...?

Avatar of pjblea

Yeah, the whole things just seems like a waste of time...to start a bunch of games, track them for a few moves and then resign....I have better things to do.  If it is due to "sandbagging" with the idea of playing lower rated players in a tournament, again, waste of time.

Avatar of TheGrobe

If it's sandbagging it's more than a waste of time -- it's cheating.

The lowest rated person on 960 has a zero rating

Lemon yellow- and name them Buddy.

Oh, apologies- you meant before he/she/lemon was born...

Seriously, people should earn ratings points for lasting 30+ moves against ouachita- kinda like going more than one round with a bear

Avatar of elwood1251

That sounds like a dumb idea, why would someone do that?

Avatar of Gerik

possibly so he/she can appear to be a weak player and then beat someone with a much higher rating just to watch their rating shoot up hundreds of points at a time? just a thought. 0- Gerik

I have had  one opponent whom I played and I won by resignation > OK > then the same player challenged me to a game and said will you resign as I am new to Chess.com I need to have played (I think 5 games) so they could get into a YOURNEY > I refused and said> that is not the way to go about things.

Possible the player wanted to accelerate their games to enter.

I have a  friend who has no home Internet access, I became friends after a team match and we have played a number of games (I think 3 or 4) her rating is about 900 > I will give this friend a game any time as that is what real chess and friends are about (the last time we played it was 10 days per move and it was still a struggle for her)

These for me are two different ways to loose a game.
