Okay admit it, Carlsen Caruana is a borefest.

Test match cricket can take 5 days to draw, and you complain about a 3 hour chess game?

Now THERE *is* a snoozefest: cricket (baseball is just as bad mind you).

Then there's darts, golf, show jumping, golf, tennis, and motor sports to name a few others...

You mentioned golf twice: does it take the crown? happy.png

How about a marathon? You watch people run for 4 hrs.

Then there's competitive 'walking'. The most ridiculous thing ever...

Looks like it will be decided by the speed games.

Magnus is considered the best speed player of the two.

I think Magnus has the advantage if he survives Game 12

I must say as a Norgwegian person i do want Carlsen to win, but i start to think Caruana has a better preparation......

Avatar of brianchesscake

game 12 is going to be exciting though! both players trying their best to win it all before the tiebreaks start...Caruana has every reason to push harder. of course neither player wants to lose. the emotions and tension will be very high!

Caruana blundered a pawn at game 11, in a flat equal position, but this was not enough to give magnus winning chances.

He would probably need to hang his queen for as to see a decisive result from these two.

Carlsen admitted that if Caruana wants to try his luck in the rapids, that's fine with him. And if Caruana wants a fight in game twelve, that's also fine with him. I think Carlsen is comfortable not striving for too much, and believes he has better nerves than the American.

it is really terrible getting the title just because you blunder in an equal position at blitz or rapid tie break because of time trouble..

Every single game of this tournament is incredibly interesting and quite enjoyable, even though all turned out to be draws...

If you watch the Giri-Svidler-Grischuk team of analysts live, every game is vastly entertaining, even if the moves aren't! And yeah, I agree with @verylate that game 11 could have been agreed to a draw on move 30 and nobody would have complained. Ok, judging by the proliferation of threads complaining about the games here, yes, there'd be complaints. But the game was clearly drawn at their level. Carlsen may have had some hopes of tricking a ~25xx GM in that endgame, but not Caruana.

I would say that despite the abundance of draws, this match has been far more gripping than Carlsen vs. Karjakin. The draws in that match were the result of players playing to avoid losing. The draws in this match are due to players failing to convert a winning position. Big difference.

In the Karjakin match, Carlsen did all the heavy lifting while Karjakin played for draws even as White. Carlsen pushed too hard and nearly lost, but he was clearly the better player in that match and a longer match would have proven it.

This match is much more evenly contested. I still believe Carlsen is slightly better than Caruana, but the match is too short to separate them.

Years ago if the mach was a draw, then there were no more games. The challenger lost automatically.

Luckily the #1 rated player in the world is also the best rapid and blitz player in the world, so the speed games shouldn't result in an illegitimate champion.

Yeah, seems Carlsen is not willing to push in the classical games. If Caruana happens to lose there, fine. If not, Carlsen knows he has good chances in the speed games so that's fine too.

If Magnus was to wipe the floor with Fabi, people would still complain...

Even after back and forth matches in years past, people still complained...

Did you really expect this to be a one sided encounter in classical chess?

They're ratings are only separated by 3 points. Who could of predicted that they would draw a lot?

Avatar of AutisticCath

They are both, what Lakdawala would consider, "doves". Neither of them like to attack. It is impressive when Caruana plays Mamedyarov regardless who wins because one is going at the other's throat (or trying to) and the other comes up with the impressive defense. But when neither side likes to make an effort to create chances, that is when things get boring.

Avatar of rivermonster60

Not boring! All top level competition is close. They are not trying to entertain someone as skilled as you.

Avatar of JayeshSinhaChess

Well I have seen Grishuk cross his fingers and want the games to finish early as they are very boring and so he could go get his early dinner. So exactly what level of "skilled" players is this match trying to entertain. Even above the likes of Grishuk?
