Online Chess rules vs OTB Chess rules

One thing that confused me when I started playing online is how the rules deviate away from OTB chess rules. So I ask some of the seasoned members of the website, why the rule changes? Is it to add more excitement, or is it a whole new chess variant all together which is more popular online?

For example, in OTB chess, I play with the rule that I can castle even if I'm in check. Chess.com doesn't let you do this. I also try to avoid the en-passant rule in OTB, due to its complications, but Chess.com forces it upon you. The other thing that I didn't like is the clock. When I play OTB, I don't feel rushed or pressured because I don't use a clock. I can think of various other examples, such as pawns being able to move backwards, etc.

So I ask, do most users prefer this online variant of chess to the OTB version?

Thank you.

The rules are the same In over the board chess and here. You just haven't played by the rules until now. The can't castle out of check and en passant rules have been around for at least 150 years. Pawns could never move backwards, at least that I have read.

As far as taking your time, there are many different time controls. The slowest live chess time control is 45 minutes with 45 seconds added for every move you make. Those games can easily go two hours or longer. If that isn't slow enough, you can set custom time controls as slow as you want. The problem will be getting someone to play with.

You can play daily chess and take up to two weeks on moves if you want.

I was hoping this thread was to inspire the forums, and allow us to dwell into sophisticated intellectual debate. However, a day later, here it sits with only 1 reply.

I'm running out of ideas, perhaps its time to hang up the old keyboard.

I think they have special courses for not very gifted wannabee trolls.

Here's a novel idea. What about making a non-troll contribution?

Thanks for the "suggestion" but I'm not interested in becoming a troll. I don't have time to waste on meaningless banter, I'm here to improve my game, and engage others in serious chess discussion. I've said this before, if you're here to troll, there is an off-topic section waiting for you. Have a nice day.

In my opinion, the worst of these changes from OTB play to online chess is that stupid stalemate rule. Why did chess.com invent this horrible rule?

What horrible rule?

He's referring to stalemate, there's no such thing in OTB.

There isn't?
I'll have to revise my understanding of endgames.

Also, in OTB you must warn your opponent when he is in check or when you threaten to take his queen. None of this is done here.

Yes exactly. Every time I've played OTB, if I put my opponent in check, I say "check". Failure to do so in OTB results in automatic forfeit, or allows your opponent to ignore the check and play on. That of course depends on whether you're playing proper rules or house rules.

Did you miss that word in university while you were busy mastering the intricacies of the theory of relativity?

Also, in OTB play if somebody insults you while playing, you slap his face instead of behaving like a sissy and "reporting" it.

Thanks Urk, will edit it right now.

No, you challenge him to a duel. That's what I always do, as a matter of honor.

I play OTB chess at our local club nude but chess.com insists that I wear clothes. Wait...I have those reversed.

Very interesting, online chess and OTB chess do also have different dress codes for players. Thanks for pointing that out.

@kingofshedinjas By the way, you have not posted a thread in a while. The forums are really missing it. It seems that nowadays I can only rely on 2Q1C to post threads that spark deep, intellectual chess discussion.
