Mimicking people by choosing openings is about the best they do. Engines always play like engines (because that's what they are). Although adjusting the blunder rate and how they value king safety can give them a different feel.
If you're looking for a free program that offers personalities and ratings I believe the dasher interface does this. An old copy of chessmaster would be pretty cheap and they have a lot of personalities with ratings... although like I said I see it more as a marketing gimmick.
Okay, So I need help finding this website. It has an engine on it that can simulate wide varieties of players. All the way from 1200 to Magnus Carlsen 2900 ... Which I guess it's him at full strength. They have others like Paul Morphy, Garry Kasparov, Bobby Fisher, Hikaru Nakamura. It actually simulates them extremely well. It uses all of their games and simulates the moves they usually do. The Bobby Fischer personality played the Kings Gambit. This engine was in beta mode the last time I saw it. I cannot find it again for the life of me. If anyone could help me find it, that would be greatly appreciated. Right now I'm doing a study on Human vs. Engine chess styles and I was using this website, but now I can't find it. Thank you in advance for your help.
