why would someone rated below 1200 want to play a 20002500 rated player, i like a challenge but thats chess suicide.....Surprised

It is really benefitial for you to play opponents who are higher rated than you so that after the game you can review the game with your higher rated opponent and they can show you where you went wrong during the game, help you to learn from your mistakes, and they can show you how they think during a game, decide on moves, and formulate plans during the game.

 

I love playing higher rated opponents and I try to do it as often as possible to help improve my chess play.  Smile

yes and me its a good way to learn but not 1000 above my own it would be too big a gap...... im around 1400 i,ll take on an 1800 for knowledge but i,m not going to over reach myself  .....Wink

I don't mind playing them as long as they don't waste time developing their Kings Knight to H3 and try to convince me that's really a wonderful first move.

I would agree with lostapiece - suicide. I think if you play someone too high above you you spend too much time on the run and don't really have an opportunity to actually learn....way too much "D". I typically like playing someone at my level to 500+/-.

If you challenge someone much higher in rating, they will probably not accept, and consider it a waste of their time. Better to engage someone within striking distance, so to speak, when the prospects of giving them, and yourself, a good game appears to be more realistic.

Higher rated players are the best! If u lose to a higher rated player , u learn more. But if u win to a lower rated player than u learn nothing.

It is generally recommended to play one section above your rating level, or approximately 200 points, but no more than 400. Basically, once you have learned enough to reach one level, it is time to learn what will get you to the next level, and so on, and so on...
