I am a d4 player and I am looking for suggestions on good d4 opening books.

Particularly I want a book on the queen's gambit, a book on the KID, and a book that covers 1.d4 more generally.

Thanks!

lovechess2016

Have a look at Lars Schandorff's series. He gives positionally sond lines (meaning even if you learn just a few moves you will not go down in flames positionally) and his suggestions offer white a safer game with good opportunities to press (and the occasional nice sacrificial miniature when your opponent has no idea what he's doing).

I'll tell you the author in a few days!!!

As I recall, that one advocates 1 e4.

Starting Out: Queen's Gambit Declined by Neil McDonald (2006)

https://web.archive.org/web/20140627005627/http://www.chesscafe.com/text/hansen93.pdf

might serve as a general introduction. We have often seen recommendation of the somewhat older book, Queen's Gambit Declined by Matthew Sadler (2000).

A few years ago, there were a number of books with advice for White:

A Strategic Chess Opening Repertoire for White by IM John Watson (2012),

Playing 1.d4: The Queen's Gambit by Lars Schandorff (2012),

http://www.qualitychess.co.uk/ebooks/Playing1d4QueensGambitexcerpt.pdf

The Kaufman Repertoire for Black & White by GM Larry Kaufman (2012),

https://www.newinchess.com/Shop/Images/Pdfs/955.pdf

A practical repertoire with 1.d4 and 2.c4 Volume 1 by Alexei Kornev,

http://reviews.dailychess.org/a-practical-repertoire-with-1-d4-and-2-c4-the-complete-queens-gambit-volume-1-by-alexei-kornev-chess-stars-2013-304-pages/

https://www.newinchess.com/Shop/Images/Pdfs/7288.pdf

and A Cunning Chess Opening Repertoire for White by Graham Burgess (2013).

I think Watson, Schandorff, Kornev, and Kaufman advocated 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e6 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 cxd5 exd5 5 Bg5, while Burgess advocated 1 d4 d5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 c4 e6 4 Nc3 Be7 5 Bf4. I think some of these authors have written advice for White on dealing with the KID.

If the Catalan is your interest, perhaps the most recent book help is to be found in Grandmaster Repertoire 1A - The Catalan by Boris Avrukh

http://www.qualitychess.co.uk/ebooks/GM1A-Catalan-excerpt.pdf

and Grandmaster Repertoire 1B - The Queen's Gambit by Boris Avrukh.

http://www.qualitychess.co.uk/ebooks/1BTheQueensGambit-excerpt.pdf

Not sure what the focus is for the 2016 books, The Queen's Gambit by Damian Lemos and First Steps: The Queen's Gambit by Andrew Martin.

Advice for Black can be found in Declining the Queen's Gambit by John Cox (2011).

Correct...The subtitle of the book is "Winning With 1.e4"....

It is a popular openings repertoire book for the beginner-intermediate player...

Just get Modern Chess Openings it covers everything.

Agree. Sadler's book is great.

Is there a good book for Black against 1. d4 d5 and 2. everything except c4  (for example Colle, London, Catalan etc ...)?

Maybe consult:
Grandmaster Repertoire 11: Beating 1 d4 Sidelines by Boris Avrukh (2012)

Jenium - the answer to your question is yes.  Avrukh's book and also...

"Dealing With d4 Deviations" by John Cox....

Although it is less comprehensive than Avrukh, it's still pretty good in my estimation...

If you include DVDs and videos, then you might want to check out GM Simon Williams's site, gingergm.com.  He has a complete 1.d4 repertoire for the attacking player, where he covers every major line from the white perspective.  He has a good mix of memorized moves (play this or you'll lose, so memorize it) and also general commentary (such as, 'in these types of position, our goal is always the d5-break,' or 'do not be in a hurry to win back the pawn, because our compensation is long-lasting').

I'm an 1.e4 player with a preference for slower, positional games, but watching the first half of this series has seriously gotten me considering switching.  If videos are your thing, it's worth a shot.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions guys (and gals?)!
