There are thousands and probably even millions of sound openings. I think a few ten thousands have been named.

White has 20 possible first moves. Black has 20 possible replies to each one.

So that's 400 possible lines, just for Move 1 by each player. So for just two moves on each side, that would be... in excess of 160,000 lines.
