#1: Think. Don't play openings on autopilot, even if it is a system you know.
#2: Follow opening principles. Develop your pieces, try to control the center, get the king to safety. In general try to avoid moving a piece more than once until you are well developed.
#3: Don't assume that because you are still in the opening there are no tactical threats. Evaluate what every move by your opponent threatens, watch for traps and tactical tricks.
#4: Don'tattack until you are well developed and have your pieces focused on the area of the board you would like to attack. Attacking too soon will cause your attack to fail, and and likely leave your opponent better developed.
#5: Never forget rule #1.
