Opponents Time Running Out

Twice I have lost a game when the opponent's time ran out before mine while I was waiting for him to move and could not move myself.  Why does this happen?

Your connection to the server has dropped.

But there is no indication that I have been disconnected from the server.

Are you playing on the app or online? On the app your clock will start flashing if you have disconnected.
