Russian Roulette.
Other turn based strategy games?

I'm definitely a grognard -- Advanced Squad Leader, Axis & Allies, a host of old SPI and Avalon Hill games etc.
I used to play Axis & Allies with my brother too. But I often won that one. I found it very imbalanced though, if one of the sides got "heavy bombers" it was basically all over. On the end hand, "Super Subs" was just terrible!

If it's turnbased, Territory War Online is a good turn based... it's not that strategic, but its a good sidescrolling stickman deathmatch. Again, not like chess, but pretty fun.

Oh! Command and Conquer! forgot that... not turnbased, but a bird's eye RTS (real time strategy), I'm playing 3: Tiberium Wars myself, with the Kane's Wrath expansion (please note my avatar :) It's a good time, although playing online, you tend to find people who just abuse the lack of any unit limits... God I hate spammers...

I have played Territory Wars, and it is pretty fun. I think I was just a fan of Zatikon cause it was so chess like, but I should just take a look at more RTS games.

I recommend a game called Stratego. It's not chess, but it involves a lot of thought and it's quite fun. It's strategic (as the name implies). I'm pretty sure there are places to play online if you look. Of course, just buying a set for like $15-$20 isn't bad at all as well.

Yeah we talked about it earlier in this thread. Def a classic, I used to play it a lot.

Hive is an insect based tile game that was featured in this month's Wired magazine and looks interesting. I've not tried it -- has anyone else?
Here's a link to the official site: http://www.hivemania.com/

TheGrobe, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, I have played Hive (on Boardspace.net), and it does have very interesting chess-like mechanics. You have all these pieces which you can place anywhere you want, but to win, you need to figure out the optimal placings, and work out the proper strategy. I'm not really sure how popular it is, but I definitely think it is worth giving a try if you get the chance.

One of the absolute best turn-based strategy video game series I've ever had the pleasurable addiction to playing is Advance Wars. It's made by Intelligent Systems who also makes the Fire Emblem games. There's two on the Gameboy Advance and two on the Nintendo DS. There's very little randomness to them with most everything visible to each player (except when playing in fog of war). Properties are static, but can be captured. Units are bought and deployed upon the next turn. Planning is everything in Advance Wars.
I liken it to chess for its "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" approach. It's much more fast paced than games like the Civ and AoE series, which frankly bore me in comparison. It's an all-out battle to rout your opponent from the map or capture their HQ.

Rigamagician: I'd missed your first reference to it. It looks interesting.
Speaking of tile-based games, I'm also surprised that there's been no mention of Settlers of Catan or Carcassonne.

if you are looking for video games, the best tbs are the Fire Emblem series and Advance Wars. there are 4 AW'S in english and 5 emblems.

hadnt seen this when i posted. Advance Wars are great games and The Emblems are even better. Inteligent Systems does a great job with strategy games. both series highly recomended.

I agree, Advance Wars are great games. I will have to check out more of those games.
I used to play Age of Empires and Majesty, not super turn based, but still decent strategy games. But I guess there are an endless amount of non turn based strategy games.
I still play Majesty from time-to-time. Not AoE so much, but occasionally. (Only the original, I don't have the sequels.) Are you aware that Majesty 2 is being released this year?
