Other ways to get better at chess

I was wondering, are there other free ways to learn tactics and such for chess online? I found that the Chess Mentor helped me a lot, but I ran out of free time, and I can't pay anything to continue. Are there other sites that offer similar free things, or should I just stick to playing games and reading books? Thanks

Check out ChessVideos endgame simulation, it lets you try to do basic mates with queen, rook, 2 bishops, bishop+knight, etc.
