Hiarcs 12 is pretty awesome. I still use it, despite having a lot of great chess apps for iPhone. Obviously not a pretty as the iPhone stuff, it's still the most robust portable software there is - at least in my experience. In addition to all the usual stuff, it fully supports 960 and can handle branching into sub-lines in the PGN that it saves/exports. I don't think there's an iPhone chess app that can do either of those yet..

I have been trying the demo which is at 1200 whereas the full is about 1700 ELO ...which is respectable considering the limitations of PDA operating systems. It seems to play a reasonably good game. I might go with it for the reasons you mentioned. Seems to be a level above the rest.
