Pawn opening move query

I'm a beginner.  I was wondering can a pawn in its very first move, attack diagonally to capture a piece or must it first move forward?  As a game I recently played I was not allowed to move my pawn diagonally.  Moving my pawn wasn't putting my king in check either.

Thankyou

you are allowed to take a piece diagnolly.. only if its 1 sqaure diagnolly up left or right, not going down.

Could you post it for us?

Thank you for your answers.  I definitely wasn't was in check or putting anything in check.

It was a pawn that hadn't moved all game.  I was simply wishing to take out the opposition pawn who in the square immediately diagonal to it.

I thought it was probably an oblique rule somewhere but couldn't find it.

If I can recreate the situation I'll try post a capture.

Thankyou

If you could post a link to the game and the move number, I'll see what may be happening.

Yes, a pawn's first move can be a capture.

At the start of the game, the third rank is protected by White's pawns, and the sixth rank is protected by Black's pawns.
