There was a notice clearly posted on your game archive page. And, as others have said, your games haven't been deleted.
Why not reach down a little and help chess.com?
It is true that Chess.com has been free for some time now, but the amount of work by the staff and continuing support they put into it requires compensation sooner or later. This you denote in your post, however, you seem to not realize that those who pay are now receiving a premium for their price. To enact the membership fees, restrictions on other site aspects was in order. You cannot just charge a fee and allow those who do not support the site to recieve the same benefits, that simply is not fair.
In retrospect a memo to all existing Chess.com members could have been sent out prior to enacting the fee structure, yet at the same time it was no secret that this would happen. Eric, et. al. were very open about this coming event as they are putting many hours of effort into creating and maintaining this site for you and anyone else who enjoys playing here.
You cannot say that you did not have ample time to download all your files sooner, and in essense you proscatenated and truly have yourself to blame.
It is not the intent of Chess.com to upset anyone, or hurt anyone. The site has been free as it is very new to the internet domain, and went through many phases to reach it's present stage. Thus, Chess.com staff members worked for free to create a site that you and all others could enjoy while in turn giving them time to make it an experience you would not forget.
I cannot speak for the staff, but I am certain if you sent them an email and discussed things it would be dealt with properly. Eric and his staff have been and continue to be completely professional during the course of their efforts.

I get to play chess against people from all over the world for free.
As far as I am concerned, chess.com owes us nothing.

why not just sign up for the silver membership ($4.95) for a month, then download all of your games, and then unsubscribe? :)
95% of the site is free, and the parts that are not were CLEARLY MARKED!
A hamburger is 5 dollars?!! Where?! OMG .... I can remember when my brother and I used to go to the movies on Sat afternoon, we would get a coke and popcorn each all for one dollar!! I guess I am a dinosaur but I really DO recall those prices. I protest the high price of going to theatres now by NEVER buying their popcorn or coke anymore, I dont like paying 3 or 4 times what it costs to get the same thing outside the theatre. If people simply refuse to succumb to such price gouging you would see the prices fall.
I enjoy the site, I pay for everything else I enjoy (one thing excluded) so why not in this case?
If I was running the show I wouldn't have made the change differently.
A long long time ago there was a free telnet chess server. The owners of the server were hosting the operation for free. Eventually they decided that they needed to charge a fee for their service. Many members happily paid the fee in order to continue to enjoy their internet chess. Many members also complained vigorously, even though it was pointed out (similar to Erik's comparison) that if they spent a fraction of the time they spent complaining working at a minimum wage job instead they could already afford the yearly membership fee.
What was the fate of this chess server? It is the world famour Internet Chess Club. Because of the increased resources provided by charging a fee to it's members they are continuously adding new features, they attract some of the world's strongest players, they host live commentary by world class players on the top events throughout the year. In the meantime a 100% volunteer chess server exists that is free. While it's a nice place to find a game, you don't find the top players there, new features are rare, and there simply isn't the wealth of resources available to customers that pay for their chess server.
I think there is no reason to get up in arms about how chess.com is running this site. They are providing a service, of course there is a fee. I wouldn't expect the service to be that great if there wasn't!
I understand that. I know it is terribly expensive to run your site for many reasons. My question with regards to the Business strategy is how you intend to make the site profitable and what time period you have in mind and last but not least how you are planning to create a regular flow of revenue etc.etc.
Allow me to respond although Erik is the man. Excuse me.
Everything has a price and if the price is right Chess.com is for sale too.

I understand the need to have some people pay to keep chess.com alive but did you have to destory the basic members archive before we could download them in pgn files. I mean really I had alot of games there that I never got to download from pgn files and put into my chess programs, was there a memo that I didn't get. It is just upsetting because now I have lost all of those games forever.
