Try playing longer time controls.  Folks are usually nicer IMHO.

people are mean on this site

I think it's like anything else in life, you will come across some nice people and some not so nice people. It may be difficult, but try to forget the encounters with the mean ones. As post #3 observed, some people use social media just to be mean.

Could be, but it will improve with your departure. Don't let the door hit you on the way out . . .

You should really try break into the ‘ I think I want to kill myself’ market.

As a forum topic it is of course as pathetic as this one but it will get you more attention.

I am not sure you are ready for it yet but give it some thought, I mean if you are going to start crap topics it is always best to start the crappest topics and not waste time on regular crap.

What rules have I broken?

Because of this crap I advise the parents of the kids I teach to go on Chesskids.

Milo I understand because the same has happened to me. I guess it depends largely on the people you hang out with here.

If you just play chess the only 'mean-ness' you will be on the end of is someone taking your Bishop or checkmating you.  Chat is optional and is disabled by most people who are even semi-serious about the chess itself.

Ive been on the site for over five years now. Yes. Mean people are in this world. Yes. Mean people are on this site ( RedGirl is one of them). However, we come here because we love the game, we don't have to like or love the players were competing with. I have under 20 friends that I have befriended over the course of time on chess.com, and they've all been worth the time. To an extent, I have much appreciation for everyone who comes here and isn't afraid to give their mind a workout....I have much more respect for these people who sit around and watch mindless dumb TV shows hour after hour after hour. Mean or nice, we are intelligent to some degree or another if were more interested in using our brains rather then getting involved in the other pitfalls in life. Remember that.

The level of emotion and mental maturity here certainly varies from player to player, but I think the majority  generally reflects a higher level than society at large.
